Sectarianism is a deeply rooted and multifaceted socio-religious issue that has influenced the Islamic world for centuries. This research investigates sectarianism in both its religious and socio-political dimensions, tracing its causes in historical, jurisprudential, cultural, and economic contexts. Sectarian divisions have led to significant challenges within Muslim societies, including weakened social cohesion, intercommoned tension, and the obstruction of collective development.
The study adopts a neutral and analytical approach, aiming to understand the foundational causes and dynamics of sectarianism. It examines how sectarian identities are formed, reinforced, and sustained through theological disputes, political agendas, economic disparities, and cultural narratives. Special attention is given to the role of modern factors such as media influence and identity politics in deepening these divides.
A major objective of this research is to explore the intellectual rebuttal to sectarianism.
This includes reviewing efforts by Muslim scholars, reformers, and social activists who have worked towards inter-sect unity, interfaith harmony, and conflict resolution. Their contributions—whether through academic discourse or grassroots initiatives—are analyzed to extract meaningful insights and strategies. Rather than promoting any specific ideology, this study aims to initiate an inclusive and scholarly conversation around the nature of sectarian conflict and the prospects for unity. It aspires to provide fresh pathways for understanding and mitigating sectarianism, ultimately contributing to a more cohesive, peaceful, and harmonious Muslim society.
